How Do I Become a Disciple of Jesus Christ?
Our purpose as a church is to communicate the love of Christ to all people. Our desire is that each person has an opportunity to experience the love and grace of God through His Son, Jesus Christ. The desire of God according to Scripture is not only that we know Him but that we also become a disciple of Jesus and allow our life to be led by Him. The question for many is, how does this happen? What must I do to know God in a real way and become His disciple? We would like to share with you.
Coming to Christ begins with believing in God and recognizing that God is God and we are not. It is at this point that we admit that we are sinners in need of forgiveness from God. Romans 3:23 says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We are not on the same plane as God and cannot work our way to Him (Ephesians 2:8, 9). God dealt with the issue of our sin by sending Jesus to the cross to die for us. All we must do is admit that we are sinners in need of God’s forgiveness.
As we admit our sin, we must believe in Jesus as God’s Son. Many people think Jesus is a good man and His life is to be emulated. The Bible teaches He was much more than a man, but God’s Son and God as well. He is not to be emulated, but believed in and followed. By believing in Jesus as God’s Son I accept who He is and what He did for me on the cross. (John 3:16)
The next step is to confess Jesus as our Savior and Lord. It is at this point that we tell God we embrace Jesus as our Savior, the One who saves us. We are in effect telling God, ourselves, and the world, that we cannot save ourselves and are trusting in Christ to do so.
Many people stop at this point and fail to recognize that we are not merely to receive Christ’s forgiveness, but are to live for Him. He will live in us and we are to be His disciples. As a disciple of Christ, I learn how to allow Him to direct my life and live in me. I worship Him, pray to Him, read the Bible to learn more about Him and the effect He can have on my life, and serve Him at home, work, play and through a local church. As I do these things I experience His presence, love, and influence on my life.
If you are ready to become a disciple of Jesus Christ you can do so right now by simply praying about what you just read. Admit to God that you are a sinner. Believe in Jesus as Good’s Son. Confess Jesus as your Savior and Lord. Once you do this, make a commitment to start learning how to become a disciple and growing in Christ.
